ALISON

Mr. Microsoft had shafted her. Five properties, eight showings, and one botched marriage counseling session, and there was nothing to show for it. Alison could scream. And the worst of it was, it was her own fault. She knew what Peter was like; she should have never let him handle the exclusivity agreements after the first time he’d messed up, but afraid as she’d been to lose their business, she’d rushed things, had given Peter the benefit of the doubt, and now here she was—all that work for nothing.

“Other fish in the sea,” she muttered through her teeth, turning into the office parking lot. “Other. Fish. In. The. Sea.” She willed it to be true. She’d find a different account, a better one. If she got a head start reaching out to potential referrals today, she might even have something in the bag by the end of the week. You push on. Got a broken pinky toe, guess what? You can still pirouette. It’s all in how much you want it.

She’d work for a couple of hours, go get groceries, and then head home. She’d had to leave Tyler rather abruptly after their shower that morning and she needed to talk to him, tell him they’d do more sessions with Dr. Wezniak. She’d try harder. Maybe they could go out to dinner and celebrate her N.A.W.B.L. nomination. Good Lord, she’d almost forgotten about that. You win some, you lose some. That award was more important than another millionaire client in the grand scheme of things. As long as she won.

She parked and texted Tyler her plan and an ETA of 7 PM.
